WICHE Stat Alert: Achieve, Inc. Releases Competency-Based Pathways

A new publication from Achieve, Inc. attempts to provide a structure state policymakers can follow to improve the postsecondary readiness of all students. "Advancing Competency-Based Pathways to College and Career Readiness: A State Policy Framework for Graduation Requirements, Assessment and Accountability" (http://www.achieve.org/files/13-195%20Achieve_CBP_07018.pdf) uses the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) to frame the state policy context and explore key questions, including how graduation requirements will align with demonstrated proficiency as defined by the CCSS, what kind of role postsecondary education should play in the development of pathways assessments, and how current accountability policies will affect implementation. The report further explores the way in which state policy influences how students progress through the education pipeline, what mechanisms are in place to ensure school districts consistently implement the new standards, and how the state can create performance goals that are both ambitious and achievable.
